Ok, I'm making this quilt for my mother in law. Her birthday is mid August, and I'm hoping to have it all finished in time to mail it off. My goal is actually just to not have it be *too* late. But I wanted to share my progress in this little hobby of mine.
First, Jen sent me a cross stitch pattern that she kitted up for me, so I did two of each flower, a daffodil and a daisy:
This part took a few weeks.
Then I searched for "grandparents" quotes online and found this one, that I stitched up in a gradiated green floss:

As I was stitching, I was thinking it should be done one square at a time instead of one row at a time like I was doing, but I already had a lot of it done. Later Jen confirmed I was doing it wrong, but I decided I was ok with the way it looked anyway, and left it as is.
Then I picked out some fabrics and (quickly) laid this out:
Then I sewed the top and added two colors of borders and came up with this as a final top piece:
Not the most perfectly straight piecing job ever, but it makes it - um - charming?
I've started quilting the layers now. I'm doing a zig-zag pattern through the ladder section (the dark green # sign looking part) and I'm doing what's called a "seed stitch" through the daffodil pattern. A Seed Stitch is a bunch of tiny random stitches through the background. If I had realized it was going to take so long, I would have probably just outlined each flower and leaf, but it's too late now. I also bought a generic stencil to do flower chains up the yellow and green borders. I think I could probably fit four lines of that, but I may do only two if I'm really sick of stitching by then.

A little bit further out. Obviously, I'm still working on this square.
Ok, so that's what I have done so far. I'll update this as I get further along, and maybe I'll do another blog with the baby quilt I'm working on, too.

Whoa!! That is too cool!!!! My moms been trying to get me to get into this for 4 years now!! First I don't have a sewing machine and second I wouldn't have a clue where to start!!!
1That is so beautiful spm!!!!!!
This looks SO freaking beautiful!! She's going to love it!
2WOW! This looks amazing so far and I hope its not too late either.
3really pretty. I don't have any creative parts about me to do crafts. But I have always wanted to learn to quilt.
4My best friend made us a quilt for our first anniversary, and it's the nicest present I ever got. She's going to love it.
5that is so pretty! quilting requires a lot of patience and attention to detail and you definitely have those qualities by the tons SPM! I love the stitched flowers and the message, just adorable! And who doesn't love quilts? My MIL makes them as a hobby and I can never get enough of them! So far my favorite style is the trapunto, all in white, they look so elegant and timeless.

Don't worry 'bout a ting!
wow spm that is awesome. im sure she will go crazy over it
7awesome!! I love it! Massive kudos to you cause I don't have anywhere near the patience for cross stitch! I love to knit, but I've been pretty damn slack on that front
8This was only the third or fourth thing I've cross-stitched. It takes a good long time to get it right, but then again, so does quilting. They're really similar, but one just takes a steadier hand since you are doing it free. But, I think doing all the cross stitching really helped me to make my stitches more even in the quilting, too.
9Oh that's so pretty SPM. Your MIL will love it. I wish I had the patience for this sort of thing.
10That is so beautiful! I know she's going to love it and the fact that you put so much time and effort into it will make it an even more special gift.
11Gorgeous1 I am so jealous of your skilz!
12What a nice thing to do for your MIL. The quilt is beautiful and the pictures are great, too! My mom has been crocheting me an afghan for 11 years now. It should be finished in another 5.
13I love the seed stitching very much. I think the quilt is adorable and I love the quote you chose. I think she will love it and I hope you get it out in time!
Cant wait to see the baby quilt!
14looks good, great infact, I want to make a quilt some day.
15Nice Work! She will love it. The best gifts are those that are well thought out and unique. Your mother in law is going to love it and most of all, love the fact that you took so much time out of your schedule to come up with something as thoughtfull as this for her. Good Luck!
